New Light Shadhika
New Light USA, born in 2017, was a direct fallout of the internationally acclaimed PBS documentary Half The Sky, based on the book by the same name, by NYTimes columnist Nick Kristof and Cheryl Wu-Dunn. A major part of the documentary featured New Light, a registered Indian charitable organisation based in Kolkata, working for survivors of trafficking and victims of sexual exploitation. The documentary, with its real time depiction of the rescue of a young girl from potential trafficking, created an unprecedented interest and public support for the cause of survivors of commercial sexual exploitation. We created New Light USA, a U.S. 501(c)3 charitable agency, in response to Americans’ major interest and engagement with this issue.
